90 Days To Make Your Mark

just three months to prove your worth
In his recent book 'The First 90 Days' Michael Watkins suggests that new leaders get just three months to prove their worth. This brief period sets the tone for their time in office and largely determines their success or failure.
In the corporate environment we get just 90 days to make an impact. While there is undoubtedly a ‘honeymoon’ where we get to put forward new ideas and fresh approaches, this time can also be full of acute periods of vulnerability because we lack established working relationships and a detailed understanding of the new role.
Failure in an assignment can spell the end of a promising career. It makes sense to adopt a proactive strategy to make your mark on a new role in that critical first 90 day period. This involves:
- Assessing your strengths and weaknesses and understand you personal vulnerabilities
- Diagnosing your situation and understand its challenges and opportunities
- Negotiating a productive working relationship with your boss
- Looking for ways to secure early ‘wins’ or victories that establish credibility and create momentum
- Building your team and connecting with influential groups
Acorn offers a ‘First 90 Days’ leadership coaching model that can help those taking on new challenges step up to the mark and build a credible foundation that will secure their success.
The ‘First 90 Days’ model is based around a programme of 1:1 coaching that helps leaders take action and create a plan that will ensure successes. The programme also helps delegates consider broader implications in their new role including; company politics, ‘selling’ back successes, and getting the best from you new team.
