Employers and Graduates are Damagingly Disconnected

UK industry is being held back by a 'damaging disconnect' between graduates and employers
New research released by the think-tank Demos and commissioned by orange plc. demonstrates that UK industry is being held back by a 'damaging disconnect' between graduates and employers.
Talented graduates feel out of place in organisations as companies struggle to motivate and support a generation of young people with different values and expectations of a better work life balance. Graduates in turn need to develop a better understanding of the rapidly changing needs of their employers.
The report, 'Working in progress: How to reconnect young people and organisations' demonstrates that while today's graduates need to improve their skills in creativity and communication employers need to work on their cultural understanding of young people's need and lifestyles to retain their best and brightest recruits.
Diane Alger of A2B Development, the graduate development arm of Acorn, commented: 'This report backs up what we have been telling our clients for a long time. Businesses need to concentrate on developing their managers' ability to get the best from their graduates as well as building a diverse mix of skills for graduates that go beyond traditional requirements. To make this happen organisations need to create a framework for development and support together with the ability to coach and mentor graduates through inspirational managers.'
